Our meat processors became alarmed by Italy’s quarantine of the entire country. It was one of the major markets for beef exports.
“We export a quarter of beef carcasses to Italy. This is a very large quantity. Over 5000 tons per year or $ 18 million euros. The suspension of these exports is alarming. It is unclear how things will go next. If exports to other countries like Poland are also stopped, cheap production will flow from them. Perhaps it is worth thinking about protecting our market, as the purchase price may start to fall, ”explains Egidijus Mackevičius, director of Lithuanian Meat Processing Association.
E. Mackevičius notices another aspect – we lack pork and we have to export more than half of it. In addition, it is unclear what will happen with milk prices. If they fall, the supply of beef will increase and prices will fall.
“I hope everyone will need food. However, the situation is still uncertain and not optimistic. Although we are not talking about stopping factories yet, nobody knows what will happen next. If the trade ban lasts for a few weeks, then it is nothing terrible. If this takes longer, the consequences will follow, ”admits E. Mackevičius.
