Consumption has decreased due to COVID-19 restrictions and low consumer purchasing power, while French shepherds are worried about competition from New Zealand. As a result of the COVID-19 crisis, the lamb market, which is highly dependent on seasonal sales, is declining across Europe.
In Spain, poultry has replaced lamb in orders received by butchers, says Carnemad, the professional association of Madrid’s butchers and charcuteries. “According to all professionals, the meat most demanded by consumers these days is chicken. The client demands these meats in almost 50% of the visits to the establishments, the remaining 50% being divided between beef and pork, if we talk about fresh meat. The decline in consumption in the Baltic markets is felt by about 50-60%. The decline is equally felt in different categories: pork, poultry, beef, and so on. We are monitoring the market and are trying to respond to ongoing processes as fast as possible. This situation is a big challenge for many businesses, so we need to be vigilant. We can assure that the customers of JSC Baltic foods do not feel a shortage in quantities or delivery gaps, and so far the situation is stable – said Laurynas Zimblys, Director of Commerce at JSC Baltic Foods.
