The State Food and Veterinary Service (SFVS) informs that the situation of African swine fever (ASF) in Poland has been particularly difficult this year. On July 28-August 3 in the neighboring country, 10 cases of the disease were recorded in pig farms, and as many as 21 outbreaks of ASF during the month.
According to the SFVS, a total of 26 ASF hotspots have been registered in Poland this year and almost 43,000 pigs have been destroyed, 3 ASF outbreaks in Latvia, 1 in Slovakia, 17 in Bulgaria and as many as 405 outbreaks in Romania.
Therefore, pig keepers must be extremely vigilant and protect their pigs, ensure that no unauthorized persons visit pig holdings, and that pigs are not kept with pigs fed from fields (pastures) and fed only with heat-treated fodder. Also, when going to the barn yourself, follow the basic requirements – change shoes, work clothes, use only equipment for feeding and caring for pigs, and practise good personal hygiene.
In addition, human visits to forests, mushrooming or berry picking, etc., pose a significant risk of the ASF virus entering pigs from the wild.
